NuVal and heart diseaseHeart disease is still the No. 1 cause of death for Americans. It’s time to fight the trend.

This year during February Healthy Heart Month, let Valentine’s Day signal a change in the “heart happiness” of you, your family and friends. Take a small step to a better you by using NuVal’s Nutritional Scoring System in the grocery store to help choose better-for-you foods – higher NuVal scores mean better nutrition.

Here are some NuVal and WebMD tips:

  1. When considering a protein meal option, think fish. Top cardiologists recommend eating fatty fish twice a week. The omega-3 fatty acids in fish, like salmon, help to prevent plaque build-up. Salmon earns high nutrition scores, from NuVal 83 for king salmon to NuVal 93 for farm-raised coho salmon.
  2. Add vegetables, fruits and whole-grains. Most fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables rate a NuVal score of 100 while whole-grain breads and rice can score as high as NuVal 82.See MyPlate.gov for portion-control suggestions.
  3. Move for fun and fitness. Routine exercise for 30 minutes a day can strengthen the heart. Fitness experts at WebMD.com recommend breaking up activity periods into two 15-minute chunks – it is less stress and just as heart-healthy.
  4. Limit fat intake. Limiting fat intake, especially saturated fats, improves heart health.
